Sorry for the long commercial break.

Frostman has left the building and joined another. I have graduated, well, less the formalities, and have landed my dream job almost one month later. In between, I made a stop at Korea, you know, just for a few days.

About this job, I can’t describe how glad I was stepping back into the familiar offices, seeing the familiar faces and hearing the familiar voices. New faces were around, and the old smiles shone back at me. I was really jumping for joy inside when HR told me on the first day I was posted back to the old team, rather than going to hop onto a Management Trainee programme, which has been 4 months by then. Somehow, it was a pity, not going through this programme, which made me worry about advancement opportunities. HR did abolish that thought from me, but there’s always this weight.

In any case, I’m back, and I’m going to make this difference in the company.

And gawd, I spent over $300 on new clothes and shoes just that weekend.

But one thing else hit me. Frost can’t come to work with me, for now, so I take the bus. But what keeps me company on my rides left me nostalgic almost to tears. The mp3s in my phone were all JetLaXX tunes. Songs we played or tried to play. I tried changing them, but the songs I keep adding still bore resemblance to the ones we used to do.

In short, I miss the band.

Shit.

So, do all University grads find jobs before they graduate?

My guess is NO. All because of SMU. Kinds of make us a new breed of machines here in this small country.

As the band is over, and my university life as well, I’m selling all my guitars and stuff. I just sold my effects to a church, so there, probably the good deed that my stuff have done for me.

1. Epiphone Les Paul

royston_soh-img450×600-cimg9084.jpg

This limited edition pewter was love at first sight for me. If the band was any famous, I would even have signed on it before auctioning it off. But if you guys are interested, please just take a look and let me know if you’d like it. Description as follows:

“PRICE REVISED! Up for sale is an Epiphone Les Paul Studio Pewter Edition electric. Very few in Singapore! Outlook is 8/10. I got this dent on the bottom of the body when I was performing once, hit the amp. Other than that, the guitar is fine. Selling to offload, hanging up for good, no gimmicks. Buyer to meetup in Clementi at my convenience (only local sales please). Cash on delivery only. Please ask all questions before bidding. I’m open to non- bidding early closures AND REASONABLE PRICE NEGOTIATION, please post your queries on the Q&A or email me at lanevo1982@hotmail.com. Winners to contact me 3 days after winning the auction or will be given bad rating. Minimum rating at 1 please, and only for SERIOUS BIDDERS. Thanks!”

Starts at: S$480/-

2. Yamaha Pacifica Electric

royston_soh-img450×600-cimg9081.jpg

This was the first electric of mine, and I bought it even before I played in a band. Simply love this one, but the pickup’s a little shitty on it, so you might want to refurbish it.

It Ends Tonight

One last look around, and it has finally dawned onto me. Today is the last school day of my life. No more will I need to wake up and go to school at weird hours, no more will I need to crack my brains on which courses to bid and what strategic pricing I have to put on them, no more will I need to stay back in the library or some room to finish up a report and sometimes face weird group mates.

It ends, but with mixed feelings.

Yesterday, I got the phone call from the company I applied to. I’ve become statistic. “Offered a job before graduation” just like how they do it in ads. Yes, I was offered a job as a marketing executive and will be starting work in May. That was fast.

And so, after today, I put behind everything that has been true to me for 4 years. The soccer team, as much as I didn’t enjoy my time inside, it was great just kicking the ball. Windsurfing was one of the most awesome ones, just that the distance took a toll on me. Sailing, sailing was the awesomest, nuff said. The band, okay, maybe the band was the awesomest, but there’s always room for improvement. Sports Camp, Orientation both joining and facilitating, all my courses, all the Trung Nguyen Cafe days, the library.

All ends.

And what fitting end to this all, to see the best band, in my opinion, in SMU play tonight. Defunkd plays with Ben guest singing.

So long then SMU. Thanks for 4 great years, thanks for the friends I made, thanks for the Frostwoman, and thanks for making me who I am today.

And, the fairy tale ends…

After 3 years.

It’s over.

JetLaXX is very much over now. We were rejected by the organizing committee of the very last gig of our lifetime. Gone. Disbanded. Has- Beens.

And so it ends, when the email came through. The band is no more. Probably alot of people liked us, but I think an equal amount of people don’t like us. We may not be technically inclined, but we were just having fun.

Kai can now go play bass for other bands, no more binding you here on the drums no more.

David can go do your own piano solo career, melt those hearts boy.

William, go back to playing full time for the church.

Eugene, maybe join back your old band. Or just chill.

Ben, go for the next Singapore Idol. Or, we can just play poker.

As for me, I’m hanging up.

It’s been a great 3 years, so good it was the thing I look forward to everytime. I can miss soccer training, I can miss windsurfing training, I can miss Travel Club meetings, but I can never ever miss a jamming session. I love you all, I love JetLaXX.

So thanks to our critics and friends,

Joanne, our greatest fan,
close friends of JetLaXX: Roger, Sumei, Rachel,
Roslan, former co- frontman of GroundZero and close friend of the band,
Jamiel, former co- frontman of GroundZero and close friend of the band,
the whole band of Defunk’d,
Margaret Chan, former head of Arts from the office,
Jinfu, former bassist of 7TillDawn,
Jason, former guitarist of 7TillDawn,

and all those who I’ve not mentioned, if you ever screamed for us on old campus, new campus, Carnivore or Timbre, this space is for you.

Thank you all.

Also, thanks to the people who have contributed to the band when we were one, two short, and stayed to be close friends,

Gan, for playing drums,
Dawn, for playing drums when Gan wasn’t around,
Adrian, for vocals,
Melvin, for vocals,
Kelvin, our first lead guitarist,
MingSing, our lead guitarist when Eugene wasn’t around.

And last but not least,
in all words from the movie “That Thing You Do”,

Jeffrey, co- founder and lead guitarist,

All this wouldn’t have happened if not for you, and I meant it in a good way” – Liv Tyler
